Can 3 and 7 Weave a 3D Knot?

BEHIND THE WORK

Can 3 and 7 weave a 3D knot?

One point follows x(t) = (2 + 0.65 cos(7t)) cos(3t), y(t) = (2 + 0.65 cos(7t)) sin(3t), and z(t) = 0.65 sin(7t). The 3t terms carry the point around the center three times while 7t twists it around the torus seven times. Together they close into one continuous (3, 7) torus knot.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

x(t)=(2+0.65cos(7t))cos(3t)x(t) = (2 + 0.65 cos(7t)) cos(3t)y(t)=(2+0.65cos(7t))sin(3t)y(t) = (2 + 0.65 cos(7t)) sin(3t)z(t)=0.65sin(7t)z(t) = 0.65 sin(7t)0≤t≤2π0 ≤ t ≤ 2π
