Can 8 Cylinders Carve a 3D Sphere Cathedral?
BEHIND THE WORK
Can 8 simple cylinders carve a 3D sphere into a Gothic cathedral? In 1692, Italian mathematician Vincenzo Viviani posed a legendary challenge to the mathematicians of Europe: cut windows into a hemispherical dome such that the remaining surface could be exactly squared. When a sphere intersects a tangent cylinder, their shared boundary forms the famous Viviani curve. Here, eight identical cylinders intersect a sphere at 45-degree angles, creating 16 interlocking gothic arches that meet at the poles—all traced in a single unbroken, continuous 3D line with exact 0.000mm closure.
