What Happens When Earth Turns Under a Pendulum?

BEHIND THE WORK

Why does a Foucault pendulum's path appear to turn?

The pendulum keeps nearly the same swing plane while Earth rotates beneath it. In this time-compressed overhead model, A cos(ωt) supplies the fast back-and-forth swing and Ω = ΩEarth sin φ supplies the much slower precession. The display uses ω:Ω = 29:1 so the effect is visible in seconds.

Artismathic turns equations into visual art—one function at a time.

THE MATHEMATICAL RULE

x=Acos(ωt)cos(Ωt)x=A cos(ωt) cos(Ωt)y=Acos(ωt)sin(Ωt)y=A cos(ωt) sin(Ωt)
